Discovering Riverwood is a bit like finding a ten dollar bill that you had forgotten in your jacket pocket last season--- you feel giddy like a little kid and really lucky to boot. Riverwood is a 150 acre park that is nestled in amongst a variety of subdivisions. Its main entrance seeming akin to an industrial park or company driveway, it's a little easy to miss. The entrance is located at the corner of Burnamthorpe Rd and The Credit Woodlands, right in the heart of Mississauga. The really great thing about having a park "hiding" in the city is that you can access it by public transit! | We found out about this park from Rob's dad who presented us with a brochure one night. We decided to check it out the next day and we're very happy that we did. Riverwood offers ample parking, a bird terrace, an art studio/visual arts centre, a wetland area and a variety of other historic buildings. Visual Arts Mississauga offers art classes, educational programs, as well as many other learning opportunities. If you know in advance that you'll be visiting the park, you might consider seeing if an interpretive nature tour will be taking off at some point that day. Our favourite parts of this park were the bird terrace and the hiking paths which double as biking trails since they are so wide. | Culham trail is an almost-2km easy-terrain path the winds up through the park alongside the Credit River. Every once in a while, there are sidepaths that allow you to discover the Credit River up close. One thing that really surprised (and delighted us) as we marched along the nicely groomed trail, was the dense and extremely lush vegetation that engulfed us. Vines hanging from trees, enormous leaves, tall grass and beautiful flowers hugged both sides of the trail. Huge, two and three hundred year old trees spotted the forest too. For those of you who are "Lost" fans, it really reminded us of the magical forest that those survivors tramp through during each episode. Even looking up at the bridge from the ultra-green brush below seemed a little surreal.
This park seems very loved by its neighbours and this is obvious from the number of joggers, avid cyclists and friendly family faces that we met along our trek. Though well-used, there was a nice balance in human traffic. Even though we were there just after dinner time (prime exercise time for many) there were many moments of solitude for us to enjoy. At the end of your exploration, be sure to take a seat by the bird terrace for a good fifteen minutes or so. There are so many amazingly beautiful birds to admire (but who will hide until they are confident that you are just there to bask in their glory). We sat and watched for at least half an hour before making our way back home. |

It's hard to tell in this small picture, but this guy had the most amazing orange dots running down his spine. I think they are for warning predators that he's poisionous. (guess it worked... I didn't eat him)

I have always been a huge fan of spiders, but up close, this guy is a NIGHTMARE! His jaws make up 1/3 of his body length. Can't wait to get a true macro lens, and start shooting these guys up close and personal.

For a long time, I have had problems taking close up shots of flowers. They always seemed to be too soft, even when I used a tripod. I recently got a very nice lens that should do good closeups of flowers, but they still looked soft. The problem was the depth of field--closing down the aperture down has really improved the softness (both pictures were taken hand-held).
